Black Crucifixion: Faustian Dream

Finland's Black Crucifixion has been something of an enigma since their formation in the early 90's. The band started out in a true black metal style, complete with corpse makeup, with founders Fornicator (vocals), Blacksoul (guitar) and members of another outfit called Beherit providing Sodomatic Slaughter (drums) and Wennstrom on bass. Between 1991-93 the band released 2 discs, The Fallen One of Flames and Promethean Gift, however by that time Wennstrom had been replaced by E.Henrik. The band at some point began work on Faustian Dream and then suddenly stopped and ceased to exist. 2005 saw the band return to action to finally complete what turns out to be a fantastic overall piece of work. The band has traded in their traditional black metal trademarks of their earlier days and incorporated more of a goth influence into the overall sound and the result's are evident in the increased amount of symphonic, atmospheric textures. Forn's vocal style is a cross between the goth of Type O Negative's Peter Steele and the 'tragic' vocals of Celtic Frost's Tom Fischer and you can really hear the distinct comparisons on tracks like "Bible Black Tyrant", "Wrath Without Hate" and the haunting and desolate sounds of "Scandinavian Melancholy". Black Crucifixion have created an album which offers up a sublime blend of pure head banging along with moments of dismal introspection and while the disc is rather short at just over 35 minutes, there are no wasted notes on Faustian Dream, it's devoid of filler and rock solid from beginning to end. It's also long overdue.
