Furze: UTD

UTD is the North American debut from this enigmatic cult black metal band called Furze which hails from Norway. As is the case with many black metal bands Furze is a one man show, although help does come in the way of the venerable Frost from Satyricon who plays drums on two tracks. The CD is split into two distinct parts, the first four songs fall under the auspicious title of Beneath the Odd-Edge Sounds to the Twilight Contract of the Black Fascist while the second part is entitled The Wealth of the Penetration in the Abstract Paradigmas of Satan. The Beneath the Odd-Edge tracks deliver some of the coldest sounding black metal I've heard. It's primarily traditional and old school in form with an emphasis on high frequency guitar, delivered at breakneck speed. The second half actually features a little more in originality and variety as far as riffs go and the production is an improvement. The vocals at times are completely distorted and sound like a someone seriously f**ked up on acid, however therein lies some of the twisted appeal. Furze have pushed the black metal envelope in the past through experimentation and continue to do so here on UTD. This may leave some fans of black metal scratching their heads somewhat, but it ultimately it helps distinguish Furze from the pack in the long run.
