Malstrom: The World Will Be Lost

The World Will Be Lost is a very strong full-length release from New York's Malstrom. Following in the footsteps of 2004's Obligated by Obscurity EP, this one is a fiery and brutal mix of thrash, death metal, hardcore, and old school metal. What's great to see is how far these guys have progressed and matured musically in just a few short years. Four of the songs here exceed 8-minutes in length, allowing for the band to stretch out into uncharted waters. In fact, some of the extended instrumental passages will bring to mind such bands as Iron Maiden, Opeth, The Dillinger Escape Plan, as well as Dream Theater. Tunes like "Our Last Bird Flies On Forever" and "My Mortal Fetish" contain all sorts of complex guitar riffery and weaving lead breaks, while "Meridian" is one hell of a melodic and dramatic metal song that has similar chord progressions to Opeth but with vocals from Carlos Garcia that sound somewhat in the Mastodon vein. Check out the neat guitar & bass interplay on this one, giving the song a heavy prog-rock vibe throughout much of its ten minute run time. Garcia runs the gamut from harsh hardcore screams to death metal growls, as well as meditative & melodic clean vocals, proving to be a very worthy new addition to the Malstrom canon. Guitarists Remy Walle and Mike Capasso churn out some pretty nasty riffs, complex lead exchanges, and deft acoustic passages throughout The World Will Be Lost (check out the gorgeous acoustic instrumental "Day of Days"), really grinding it out on the lethal "The Beast" and the behemoth, 15-minute title track. If you like your metal furious and thrashing, check out the insane "Wither the Kill", which sees bassist Alex Coelho and drummer Bill Angelini working overtime amidst a non-stop cacaphony of complex riffs and raging vocals.

This is serious stuff here, a metal album that is both brutal and highly technical & progressive. With The World Will Be Lost, I don't see Malstrom being an unsigned band much longer, as the Metal Blade's, The End Records, and Century Media's of the world should soon be knocking.
