Roz Vitalis: Enigmarden

The music of Russia's Roz Vitalis is in many ways as mysterious as the band itself, at least to Western music fans. The group has released a handful of full length CD's and EP's over the past few years, however little information is available on the band, that is unless you're fluent in Russian which unfortunately I'm not. The music on Enigmarden will leave you scratching your head in bewilderment one minute and smiling with surprise the next. For the most part it's not an easy listen, especially all in one shot, due to its eclectic instrumentation and arrangements. The whole disc is a virtual potpourri of styles and to try to explain what Roz Vitalis sounds like or how to categorize their music is difficult. They combine progressive elements with folk and chamber music would probably be the best way to describe their ambitious efforts. The majestic sounds of the keyboards give the listener the feeling akin to that of sitting in an ancient European cathedral while the organist plays one hymn after another. Flutes and recorders permeate the shorter, more introspective compositions as the band creates a nice balance throughout the CD between grandiose epic sounding tracks and simpler moodier pieces. Enigmarden still is a bit of conundrum and will surely drive listeners with shorter attention spans elsewhere. However if you can get by the initial trepidation then I think you'll find that Roz Vitalis has quite a bit to offer.
