Homemade Knives are an independent quartet based out of Richmond VA and their debut CD titled No One Doubts The Darkness is a splendid blend of acoustic based, roots rock. Wil Loyal's (vocals / piano) forlorn, lyrical tales of longing and regret is set to some of the most beautiful music I have heard in a long time. The melodies float wistfully in the air as cellos, banjo's and mandolins add magnificent depth to this impressive collection of introspective songs. Additional female vocals provided by Anousheh Khalili and Adrienne Browne provide dreamy harmonies that when layered with Loyal's voice add so much to these tracks. The music on No One Doubts The Darkness perfectly complements Loyal's poetic musings and if this isn't the perfect Sunday rainy afternoon type of record then I don't know what is. A lot of musicians in this genre would love to craft a CD as perfect as Homemade Knives have, and many never reach the creative peak that these guys have with their debut, and that's not to say that I don't think they can top this release because I'm sure they can. I do think it's downright scary to consider where Homemade Knives can go from here, but the future looks extremely bright indeed.
