Burning Skies: Desolation...
Burning Skies is a UK metal band specializing in combining hardcore, grindcore, death and black metal. Desolation… is their third album, and their second on the Lifeforce label. After a useless intro the first real song, "RKD", starts off with screaming growls and heavy guitar power chords. At the start this band sounds like just another hardcore band that was influenced by At the Gates, but it doesn't take long to hear that they went for something a bit different. They are much heavier, and they sit on the death and black metal sides more than the hardcore. Actually, the brutality is the best thing about this album; it's heavy, it has good rhythms (bad atonal rhythms destroy brutality. Brutality is very rhythmic. Just watch any good horror movie), and it has flashes of instrumental skill. The band shows their technical skills putting together multi- chord riffs, varying tempos, blast beat drumming, and some hints at lead guitar.
This album will enter my CD player from time to time as it offers a breath of viciousness that I do not have with many of my other albums. The songs to check out include "Desolation… (For the Denial of Ignorance)", "Fairytale Supremacy", and "Could You Sink Any Lower?" It is definitely the heaviest album I have heard this year. So for that aspect alone its worth buying.
