Lanes: Hydra Missing.Fear the Worst

With an unrelenting, unrepentant and guttural drive, analog-inflected synths and a whole lotta reverb Hydra Missing. Fear the Worst manages to surpass accomplishing the sort of outcomes that result from using too many presets. The origin is electronic but the genre is clearly synth, with few of the abstractions of the former and all the filtered sweep of the latter. The pieces build atop arpeggiated patterns with sequenced (see musical definition of) phrases running mostly even-numbered events jointed into the nano-gaps of immobile bass lines. The music trades speed and 96kHz clock accuracy for having much in the way of emotional range. Which probably isn't the point, anyway.

Aside from the basic dance/trance elements Lane adds some greater depth to his phrasing, shorter time and event horizons and some convincing excursions into abstract and atmospheric sound – which always kept in check and subservient to the main business at hand. The structure has a this-then-that quality. The soundstage is dense, sometimes over crowded with clipped envelopes that populate what is finally a music addicted to speed, power and volume.
