Just when you thought Scandinavia only produced dark and brooding black metal, along comes Finnish goth-metal band Sara Lee to brighten up your day. Ok that might be stretching it a bit, and by the way the band is not named for someone in the group nor do they have any apparent ties to the American cake maker of the same name. What this sextet does on their debut full length CD is deliver a powerful disc full of melodic and memorable music in their own unique goth / metal style. At first glance it may appear that vocalist Joonas, who wrote all the music except for one track, and all the lyrics, is the sole contributor on Darkness Between, but make no mistake this CD is a true band effort and it comes across loud 'n clear in the songs. There are at least half a dozen tracks which could be considered contenders for singles on Darkness Between. The punchy lead off number "Everytime" kicks things off nicely and is followed by the hook laden and melodic "Loneliness O.D.", but at this point the band is only getting warmed up. The title track is placed right at the midway point of the disc and it's this song along with the 8 minute closing number "Like Dreamers" which finds the band stretching out and exploring their goth / metal influences with a bit more gusto. Sara Lee seem right at home creating 3-4 minute anthems as they do exploring their atmospheric side and it makes for a highly rewarding listening experience. This is one CD that I found myself listening to repeatedly for weeks and deservedly so because Darkness Between's songs will stick with you long after the music has finished and you cant beat that.
