Canada's burgeoning progressive-music label Unicorn Digital has gone metal — really metal — with its new VSR Series. The first release comes from Unerase, a dark and intense Ukrainian band that's been together for a decade. Own Universe, the band's second album, reflects years of road-tested aggression. Max Gaidouchenko's harsh, often-unintelligible vocals along with superb riffage from Alexander Takhmazov and Alexey Kosyuk push Unerase into the realms of progressive death/thrash-metal, but multiple types of headbangers should be pleased by the album's disparate range of songs. "Star" shines with added melodies and backing vocals, while "All I Desired" borders on metalcore and the title track is a surprisingly tender ballad. Unerase's overall sound, however, ensures that the band doesn't waver far from its thick, relentless boil.
VSR promises additional releases that will offer more variety than Own Universe. But by choosing Unerase as VSR's debut band, Unicorn shows that it means business.
