Spektr is a French duo formed 6 years ago primarily as a studio project. Their debut CD garnished strong reviews for its frenzied and bizarre attack but it's their sophomore release The Near Death Experience which should really turn some heads in the extreme metal scene.
Over the course of 9 tracks and almost sixty minutes, Spektr serve up one hell of an abrasive and sometimes dissonant assault on the senses. While the production is primarily on the low-fi end of the spectrum, the duo makes use of a wide variety of creepy sound effects and dark, lengthy instrumental passages in order to get their point across. At times the bursts of static and white noise collide with eerie voices from the other side like on the track "Visualization" which gives the listener the impression of either listening to a transmission from another dimension or the long lost soundtrack for the apocalypse. Spektr have managed to create an album without any pre–conceived musical notions and one which will leave you on edge, never knowing what to expect. The music on The Near Death Experience is meant to shock, confuse and leave you on edge. If this is not your idea of an ideal listening experience, then look elsewhere because this CD will only serve to irritate. On the other hand if you're looking for a dense musical escape into the abyss then you'll definitely want to add this one to your collection immediately.
