Here's another rarity from Argentina thanks to the folks at Viajero Inmovil Records. Recorded in 1972 but not released until 1974, the debut from Los Barrocos, Sin Tiempo Ni Espacio, was to be the band's one and only release, now finally being remastered from the original master tapes. Featuring dual lead guitars, lead violin, bass, drums, and multi-layered vocals (all sung in Spanish), Los Barrocos play a style of music that draws upon early prog, hard rock, psychedelic, and classical, sort of like Argentina's answer to The Flock. The soaring violin of Hector Boo Guerrero really helped this band standout, whether he was delivering gorgeous melodic lines ("Como Una Rueda"), blasting away with manic intensity ("Noche De Sol" and "Destinada a Fracasar" ), or delivering stunning classical expression ("En Cualquier Sigio" and "Cuatro Movimeientos Breves"). He works well here playing off the fuzz- toned guitar riffs and solos of Oscar Roberto Paulini & Alfredo Raul Campanelli, who are also very talented players. Also, with four singers in the band, both the lead and backing vocals are very melodic and catchy, so you needn't be fluent in Spanish to feel the groove of these songs.
It's a shame when you look at the history of progressive rock, that so many bands who came out of the scene in the early 70's, no matter what country they originated from, only had the chance to make one statement before calling it a day. Put Los Barrocos in that category as well, a promising band whose lone contribution to the genre, Sin Tiempo Ni Espacio, is all that we have to look back on. Regardless, it's a fine one at that.
