Take one listen to the song "Behind Enemy Lines", and you will instantly see what Denmark's Born From Pain are all about. This five piece taps into 80's styled thrash and hardcore quite well on their new Metal Blade release War, invoking images of bands such as Agnostic Front, Crumsuckers, Obituary, D.R.I., Testament, Exodus, and Slayer. The band has been in existence since the late 90's delivering their brand of metalcore to audiences all over the world, and with recent touring with the likes of Hatebreed, Napalm Death, and Six Feet Under, seem ready to make their mark. Powerful numbers like "Bury Me Fighting" , "Grey Life" , and "Eyes of the World" contain venemous but not too over the top vocals and no shortage of crunchy, heavy riffs, while the potent instrumental "The War is On" sees the band pounding home plenty of heavy riffs and brutal riffs like vintage Black Sabbath or Metallica. On "Doomsday Clock", Born From Pain really master the "riff" well, delivering a brand of "crunch-o-rama" that sounds like a hybrid of Anthrax, Crowbar, and Mastodon.
While War might not sound like a harbringer of originality, this is still very well played and executed 80's styled thrash/hardcore that should appeal to today's metalcore audience.
