Rabies Caste: Rabies Caste

This is the final self-titled release from Isreal's Rabies Caste, a now defunct doom metal trio, who have released a few albums and EP's since the mid-90's. Rabies Caste is more of a compilation, as it features the song "Timeless", which was originally part of their split 7" release with the band Sourvein, as well as two newer tracks recorded in 2003, and some live songs. Overall, this is pretty raw stuff, with tortured, almost hardcore type screams, raging over slow, distorted power chords, beefy bass riffs, and massive drum work. "Mind Eruption" is a perfect example of the style of Rabies Caste, with brontosaurus guitar dirges lumbering along at a Black Sabbath or St. Vitus type pace and the occasional barking vocals flying in and out of the mix. At times the band goes into pseudo-metallic pychedelic riffing, like on the noisy and feedback laden "Unmanning Your Planet", and even liven things up a bit on the punky hardcore of "God Damn". Overall though, too much of what is included here is riddled by poor sound, and an overuse of spoken word/dialogue samples. There's no doubt that this band had immense talent, and there are flashes of solid material here, but you might be better off searching for some of their earlier albums like the sludge ridden For the Vomiting Tractor Drivers or Let the Soul Out and Cut the Vein.
