Satanic death metal combines with Norwegeian black metal on the latest from Austria's Belphegor. Pestapokalypse VI is a non-stop brutal assault from start to finish, and an impressive debut (this is their seventh release overall) for their new home at Nuclear Blast Records. Produced by Andy Classen (Krisiun, Rotting Christ, Asphyx), the music here is a pulverizing wave of relentless blast beats, speedy guitar riffs, and an assortment of death grunts, black metal shrieks, and fierce growls. At times the aggression is so intimidating, like on the furious blast beat mania of "Seyn Todt in Schwartz ", that you will almost get knocked out of your chair...if you are sitting that is. Musically, despite the ferocity of these tunes, things are pretty melodic. Check out the almost doomy death metal ( a nice change of pace here) of "Angel of Retribution", a memorable piece with glorious and evil guitar riffs and a snarling vocal. Other standout tracks include "Ancient Enemy", and the blasphemous "Sanctus Perversum".
At times, the attack here is close to Viking metal, sort of in the Amon Amarth realm, and other times you will be reminded of the ultro-technical death metal of Polish bands like Behemoth and Decapitated, but for the most part the arrangements draw heavily from the black metal field, featuring those all-too-famous tremelo picked guitars and blast beats. No matter what slant you look at Pestapokalypse VI from, it's an overall impressive release from Belphegor.
