Park: Building A Better __________

I know "progressive" is in the ear of the beholder. But when I hear artists and publicists flippantly toss around the term, I get frustrated. Such is the case with Building A Better __________ , the third album from the so-called "progressive quartet" Park. The artwork and colorful packaging for Building A Better __________ seem to support that claim, but that's where the progressive tendencies end. Park sounds more like Jimmy Eat World than Pain of Salvation or Happy the Man.

As an indie-emo band, though, this Springfield, Ill.-based outfit is better than most, with limited whining, bouncing melodies and complex song structures. It's alternately serious and quippy, buoyed by intriguing song titles like "The Trophy Wife," "Angles and Errors" and "Chica Chica." But a progressive-rock record it ain't. After all, unlike Park did in "Mississippi Burning," no prog band would write a lyric as blatantly dull and dumb as "I know this sucks."

Track Listing:
1) The Trophy Wife
2) Mississippi Burning
3) Who Is Aliandra?
4) Angles and Errors
5) A Message
6) Chica Chica
7) La Amoureux
8) Irukandji
9) Intro
10) To Hide and Seek
11) A Message (Acoustic Bonus Track)
