Triclops!: Cafeteria Brutalia

Warped psychedelic, punked out proggy metal comes at you like a runaway train on the debut EP from San Francisco's Triclops!. A four piece featuring Christian on guitar, Larry on bass, Phil on drums, and Johnny on vocals, these guys play a chaotic brand of heavy music that is pretty hard to describe. The four songs on Cafeteria Brutalia rage with punk enthusiasm, but the instrumentation is anything but, as the layered guitar work of Christian owes more to bands like King Crimson and Tool than your standard punk outfit. Check out the wild freakouts and textured chords on "Jewel of Oakland", a song that also features some inspired heavy riffs and blistering drum work. The epic "Bug Bomb" should easily appeal to fans of The Dillinger Escape Plan with its complex time signatures and aggressive yet clever vocal approach. These guys are also not afraid to rip into solos, whether they be extended guitar journeys, short bass excursions, or manic drum passages. There's obviously a load of potential here, so it will be interesting to see how they progress on their full-length debut when they get around to it.
