Esoteric, The: Subverter

The Esoteric have been around since the late 1990's, delivering their brand of melodic metal and hardcore to the heavy rock masses, and their latest release on Prosthetic Records Subverter continues along those same lines. Filled with textured yet pummeling tracks like "Shipyards of Foreign Cities", "Don't Waste Guts", and "Science Is Sexy", Subverter will easily appeal to those who like their music heavy, but with plenty of indie rock eclecticism and experimentation. While some classify the band as metalcore, there's really more to their sound than that, as they throw in bits of stoner, avant-garde, psychedelic, and prog into their sound, putting them more in line with bands like The Dillinger Escape Plan, Isis, or even a less technical Into the Moat. As with many bands of this style, the non-stop screaming vocals may be a tad tiresome and monotonous for some, but thanks to the multitude of catchy riffs ("Nothing Remains The Same" is especially beefy and memorable) there is a lot for most metalheads and hardcore fans to dig into here. It's not until the last track "Clone Culture And The Cut-Up Method", an almost cyber-metal Fear Factory type number, that the band really struts their musical prowess, as the song features plenty of blistering drum work, weaving guitar riffs, flashy lead fills, and a more varied vocal attack from Steve Cruz.

In short, probably not an essential album, but a solid release for The Esoteric that shows the band maturing and taking some chances.
