Rudess, Jordan: Prime Cuts

If there is an artist truly worthy of "prime cuts" consideration from the Magna Carta group it is certainly the infinitely talented Mr. Rudess, the child prodigy Julliard trained phenom from Dream Theater. That is because this set comprises primarily all original works. Only one track here is from the legendary series of prog-rock tribute projects on that label, a scorching "Hoedown" that was one of the very best of all the label tribute tracks originally on the tribute to ELP album. There is no new material here, there are however two remixes and the CD does include a cool bonus video track of Jordan in the studio discussing and demonstrating many of the significant sounds and themes he has contributed to Magna Carta over the years.

Jordan's ability to caress or flame the keys is ably demonstrated over a set culled from his three solo albums and from other superstar collaborations like Liquid Tension Experiment, Vapourspace and the underestimated Steinway to Heaven album. The performances assembled here help focus consideration of and add credence to his ultimate consideration as one of, if not the very finest keyboard players of our age.
