One fan has dubbed Ostinato's eclectic brand of space music "epic orchestral rock," and that's probably as good a description as any for this trio from the Virginia/Washington, D.C., area. Chasing the Form, Ostinato's third album, does exactly what the title promises: It seeks to take the traditional form of song in unexpected directions, chasing it (if you will) to new sonic territories. For the most part, that ambitious approach works. Song structures are in short supply here, as ambient guitars, swelling drums and discombobulated voices lost in the ether crash into each other and create an odd and detached listening experience.
