Nightwish: Highest Hopes-The Greatest Hits of Nightwish

And so we come to the release of Highest Hopes: The Greatest Hits of Nightwish. This single CD collection features some of the bands best material from across the albums that made them famous and allowed them to become one of the most beloved and respected of the Operatic Symphonic Metal groups of all time. I admit that there are some signature tracks missing like "Come Cover Me" and "She Is My Sin" and the die hards would probably also agree that this would have been better if served up as a double disc Anthology package. The group truly had too many good songs to be relegated to a single CD yet despite this some killer stuff is present such as "Over The Hills And Far Away" (the Gary Moore cover), "Dead Boy's Poem", and "Nemo". Marco gets to sing solo on "High Hopes", which is a Pink Floyd song that does not hold much resemblance to the classic Progressive Rock act. The domestic release on Century Media Records comes several months after the termination of the bands singer, Tarja Turunen who was actually fired on the night that the band performed the concert that would be released as The End Of An Era. One would think it appropriate to call the album "Nightwish: The Tarja Years", while it now finds the band cloistered as new music is written and a replacement singer sought. I view this release as a chapter in music history closed while another is in the design stages; will it astound us and hold us in thrall as the first part did? Only time will tell and while this is a good release, you must use this as only the teaser it is and a motivator in your quest to add the Nightwish back catalog to your collection.

Nightwish: Highest Hopes-The Greatest Hits of Nightwish

My Score:

Chances are, if you are a Nightwish fan you already own all their albums making Highest Hopes-The Best of Nightwish pretty irrelevent, but for the casual fan or listener who has yet to experience the Operatic Symphonic metal style of Nightwish, this will be a good starting point. Meant to chronicle the years with lead singer Tarja Turunen (who was recently ousted from the band), this set covers many of the band's more popular songs, and while there are some glaring omissions, it's not a bad collection. Signature tunes like "Wish I Had an Angel", "Nemo", "The Kinslayer", "Wishmaster", and "Dead to the World" are here, along with the great cover of the Gary Moore classic "Over the Hills and Far Away". Crunchy guitar riffs, over the top keyboards, and soaring female vocals are the formula for Nightwish, and you get that in aduncance here.

While the world waits for keyboard player Tuomas Holopainen and the rest of the band to announce their plans for a new album and new singer, Highest Hopes will have to hold everyone over till something new, if at all, comes out of the Nightwish camp.
