Fred Tackett has been playing guitar, mandolin, and trumpet for jam band pioneers Little Feat for many years, as well as recording with such diverse artists as Bob Dylan, The Allman Brother Band, Jackson Browne, Bob Seger, Ringo Starr, Rod Stewart, and many others. In a Town Like This is Tackett's solo album, and also features his son Miles and good friend Domenic Genova. The music on the album is a rootsy mix of folk, bluegrass, World Fusion, and jam styles, with sparse instrumentation that includes acoustic & steel string guitar, mandolin, bass, cello, violin, percussion, as well as some vocals. The guitar artistry of Fred is lovely to listen to, and paired up with his son the two create some magic here alongside the singing bass lines from Genova. Check out the gorgeous "Dance For Patricia", a song that almost sounds like vintage Oregon or Miroslav Vitous. Many of the songs are heartfelt vocal folk tunes with lush instrumentation by the acoustic instruments, but the band does rip it up a bit on the bluesy bluegrass romps "In a Town Like This" and "Gold Tooth Woman", both featuring their share of guitar, mandolin, and violin duels.
Overall this is a pleasant listen for those who like folky, improvisational acoustic music, and if you have any interest at all in the music of Little Feat In a Town Like This will be a no brainer for you.
