I'm having a hard time with In the Disaster, the sophomore release from California's A Love Ends Suicide. On one hand, the band, who was discovered by As I Lay Dying's Tim Lambesis and who helped them get their record deal with Metal Blade, delivers quality metalcore with all the trimmings; a mix of harsh screaming with clean melodic passages, twin metal guitars, melodic hooks, plenty of crushing rhythms, and an overall polished yet brutal sound. Sound like a good formula? Well it should, and it is. There's no shortage of catchy yet heavy songs here, like the pummeling "Of Day Dream And Fantasy", which has plenty of bombastic metal riffs, angry screams, and catchy melodic clean vocal sequences. The crunchy grooves of songs like "Lets Spark To Fire" and especially "The Black Art", give the listener plenty to sink their teeth into, with the never ending barrage of riffs and breakdowns coming at you from all angles. Problem is, there's nothing that really stands out here from the hundreds of other bands on the scene that are basically creating the exact same type of music as A Love Ends Suicide. Chances are if you played music from In the Disaster alongside the latest from As I Lay Dying, Norma Jean, or Bullet For My Valentine, they would all sound fairly interchangeable. Not that this is a bad thing, as like I mentioned, there's some solid stuff here, including some fiery and inspired guitar playing. Just don't expect to be bowled over with originality.
