Unleashed: Midvinterblot

The Swedish death metal horde called Unleashed is back with their eighth album Midvinterblot, and first for SPV Records. Part Viking Metal and part Melodic Death Metal, Unleashed combine brutality with plenty of melody, as well as loads of shredding guitar solos. Vocally, these are some of the best the death metal genre has to offer, sounding not unlike Peter from Vader, and you can understand everything bassist Johnny sings, which is not always possible these days. However, it's the guitar work that will get the most attention here, as there is no shortage of pummeling riffs from Tomas and blistering, at times almost neo-classical styled shred solos from Fredrik. While there are a lot of strong tunes here, some of the highlights are the raging thrash/death of "The Avenger", the memorable yet brutal "We Must Join With Him", the complex riffery of "Salvation For Mankind", and the kick ass savagery of the title track. Much like their death metal brethren over in Poland like Vader and Decapitated, Unleashed write fast and brutal songs, so don't expect any epic pieces like many of the Swedish bands like to create, instead most tracks here are in the 2-4 minute range. That's not really a bad thing, as these tunes are created to basically bludgeon you to death, and get out quickly. And it works-be prepared to indulge in some serious death metal headbanging here on Midvinterblot". If you don't have your horns raised and blood pumping to a tune like "The Witch", go get your pulse checked...and quick!
