Greylyng: Oiwa

Greylyng is the duo of Jeff Cedrone (guitar, keyboards, synths, electronics, loops, voice) and John C. Miller (analog synths, beats, loops, electronics), two musicians from Connecticut who met in 2002 and decided to form a band. Oiwa is the fruit of their labor together, and album four years in the making, and one that should appeal to fans of electronica, space rock, avant-garde, and progressive rock.

Oiwa stands for a "vengeful, Japanese female ghost", and in actuality is a pretty good title for this odd but likeable album. At times the music is noisy and dissonant, as on "Dead Letters", but on other occasions the guitars sing and keyboards bubble, like on "A Morass of Communication", and this is where things really work. Fans of ambient music will dig the extended "Ruin and I Sleep", a mix of atmospheric textures, space-rock styled guitar work, and eerie prog flavored keyboard work. At times though Greylyng dives into way too much noodling for their own good, which makes some of the arrangements a tad monotonous and drawn out, but overall this is an interesting listen for those who like their prog on the outskirts of the stratosphere.
