Velvet Cut blends the mid-80s sound of Honeymoon Suite with the current pop flavors of Fall Out Boy. "Lady Solitude" opens the Finnish bands album Thirteen with a hard driving riff laden alt-rock tune. But then "Everyone To Please" and "Room Of Our Existence" follow in almost the same light and interest starts to wane. "Comfortable Silences" has a little more punch to it, in the vein of Incubus. But songs like "Where Love Has No Name" and "The Chase" are just so predicable and common. "Blow Out The Flame" and "Go Away" are slow and moody but with no real power.
Tomi Asuintupa is the lead vocalist and songwriter for the band. His voice is pleasant, but the accent is very noticeable. Sami Jormanainen is a more than adequate bass player, but the mix has his sound lost through most of the CD.
Overall, Thirteen is entertaining, but pretty pedestrian. There really isn't any spark of new or exciting here. Velvet Cut probably fills every bar they play in, and the sound is very fitting for that arena, but overall they need to take more risks.
