Crown, The: 14 Years of No Tomorrow (DVD)
What better way to celebrate the career of one of Sweden's most beloved death metal band's than to release a 3 DVD retrospective of their history. In the case of The Crown, who packed it in and called it a day back in 2004, 14 Years of No Tomorrow is the ultimate tribute to a band that never really made it as big as some of their contemporaries like In Flames, Dark Tranquility, Soilwork, and Entomed, but made their mark on the extreme metal scene nevertheless. Featuring three, count 'em, three DVD's, this set is jam packed with goodies for The Crown fanatic.
DVD 1 features what is called 'The Road to Nowhere', a pseudo documentary that is really just a montage of clips of the band staged over their songs, taking the viewer through the history of The Crown from beginning to end. There's no narration, no interviews, just music, live & video clips, and on screen text to guide you through each phase of the career of the band. Sort of disappointing, as some interview snippets of the band would have been nice, but it gives you a good sense of the chronology of their career. Don't blink, otherwise you'll miss any mention or footage of former At the Gates singer Tomas Lindberg and his brief time in the band. Otherwise, throughout the rest of this package they treat that time period as if it never existed, instead focusing on the classic line-up of growler Johan Lindstrand (current One Man Army and the Undead Quartet), Marko Tervonen & Marcus Sunesson on guitars, bassist Magnus Olsfelt , and drummer Janne Saarenpää. On the second DVD you get four live concerts, including a great set from Wacken Open Air Festival in 2002 (which would have been even better had the crowd been more lively), as well as three others of equally solid set list & performance, but sub-par video and audio quality. The Summer Breeze Festival Footage is especially a kick ass set for the band, and the crowd is going apeshit, but the camera work is all over the place and the vocals of Linstrand are mixed a little low. Otherwise it's four action packed shows of quality Swedish death metal, and while you get numerous overlap as far as songs go, seeing as they are mostly from different tours there are a lot of songs that you will only hear once. The third DVD is for the true collector only, a batch of bootleg video clips that are of really rough quality, but some are so old (dating back to the early 90's) that you just have to appreciate them for the sheer rareness factor.
While there are obviously better "power-packed" multi-DVD sets on the market (the Amon Amarth, Rush, and Therion instantly come to mind), if you are at all a fan of the music of The Crown, this will be a must own for you. For those new to the band, bask in the many hours of content that are included here, and dive into such classic death metal tunes as "Death Explosion", "Crowned in Terror", "Under the Whip", and "Death Metal Holocaust", and find out what The Crown were all about.
