Afterburner, the latest release in a very prolific discography by Dutch death metal heads Sinister is a CD the band almost didn't get to make. After slogging out in the trenches for almost fifteen years (a lifetime for some bands) the band decided to throw in the towel following their 2003 release Savage or Grace. Fans of the band rallied in the hopes that the mighty Sinister would indeed rise again and their wishes were granted in 2005 when the band announced they were back working on new material. The band delivers the goods on Afterburner with a truly scorching attack worthy of keeping them around for at least another decade or so. The CD's 8 tracks feature the typical trademarks of the bands sound, furious blast beat drumming, a chunky, driving rhythmic guitar attack and the guttural death metal vox of front man Aad Kloosterwaard. Songs such as the title track and the searing and ambitious assault delivered in "Presage of the Mindless" and "Flesh of The Servant" come across with such urgency that one cannot help but wonder if the band figured that this would possibly be their last chance at it. Either way it comes through in the music, definitely loud and certainly clear. Sinister are back but are they hear to stay this time? If the caustic delivery of Afterburner is an indication of where they plan on heading, I don't think that question requires an answer.
