Norwegian black metal terrors Vreid (Wrath in English) have been a fixture in their native country since approximately 2004 when they issued their debut CD Kraft which garnered the band some very positive reviews. Vreid was born out of the ashes of an outfit called Windir and the quartet consists of Hváll (bass), Steingrim (drums), Sture (vocals/ guitar) and Ese (guitars). The group's venomous, metallic assault on their sophomore effort Pitch Black Brigade vaults them right into the same league as their fellow countrymen Satyricon and Enslaved (an outfit they've also managed to tour with), which is an impressive feat to say the least. The vocals on Pitch Black Brigade are almost evenly split between Norwegian and English and Sture's delivery truly reeks of demonic filth throughout. Tracks like "The Red Smell", "Our Battle" and "Hang 'Em All" all have a classic old school, punk attitude and an almost Venom like quality to them. The savage riffs are about as effective as an unrelenting tenderizer pounding away on a raw piece of meat. However it's not all about thrash and speed with Vreid as they do find a way to inject different time changes into many of the songs, which adds a little more listening variety into the music as well. Tracks like the epic nine minute "Hengebjorki" and the CD's closing number "Eit Kapital For Seg Sjolv" find the band expanding their sonic palette even further, augmenting their sound with symphonic elements and traces of electronic experimentation which almost border on prog. Vreid are definitely a band to watch out for and Pitch Black Brigade is giant step in the right direction towards what should be a very promising future.
