Pentagram: Turn To Stone

Essentially a greatest hits package from these original Virginian doomsters, this 17-song CD should nonetheless find a place in the hearts and collections of anybody who appreciates primal dirge, aching melody and spooky/silly lyrics. Bobby Liebling formed this band way back in 1978 (!), which makes Pentagram, next to Sabbath, among the more primordial of doom metal outfits.

Showing a diverse range, from the pumped-up time signature switches and quasi-thrash guitar of "Relentless" to the extremely gothic "Vampire Love" (not to mention "Bride of Evil," a song about a bloodsucker's lover that makes a neat pair with Electric Wizard's immortal "Devil's Bride"), Turn To Stone forms solid proof for the enduring viability of Pentagram, a band that continues to flourish, having provided the title song to Ritchie Anasky's upcoming splatter epic I Am Vengeance. Will take you places Dante feared to tread. Worth every penny.
