Narnia: Enter the Gate

Enter the Gate is the fifth studio album from Narnia, Sweden's neoclassical proselitzers of the gospel. The material this time out seems more heavy and less dependent on the soloing, a shift that reminded me of Europe's landmark Start from the Dark comeback. In any case, both guitarist/keyboardist/producer Carl Johan Grimmark and vocalist Christian Rivel are in excellent form with a great bunch of songs. Out of the gate is "Into This Game", a fast and heavy anthem. "People of the Blooded Cross" is a fastball with a catchy refrain. "Show All the World" is a heavy rock keyboard-laced call to arms right out of the 1980s. The energetic soloing in the instrumental section reminded me of Escape-era Journey or even Triumph in execution, and is one of the album's highlights. "Enter the Gate" is short mid-paced number that is equal parts Yngwie and Dream Theater. "Take Me Home" is the ballad - basically Christian accompanied with bass guitar and piano - and occasionally peppered with guitar solos. "This is My Life" is another heavy neoclassical number. The guitar solos and keyboard sounds were more on the Dream Theater side of the equation in "Aiming Higher". But the band's progressive style of songwriting comes to full form on the album's passionate epic closer, "The Man from Nazareth". There's such a diveristy of tracks here, and the songs here are so strong, I can't praise it enough.
