If you are excpeting this collection of early Ian Gillan solo recordings to feature the singer in powerul, wailing hard rock form that many came to know of him through his work with Deep Puple or Gillan, then you had better look elsewhere. Cherkazoo & Other Stories sees the legendary hard rock singer doing his best Elvis Presley impression on 18 tracks of roots rock, blues, pop, jazz, and lounge material, much of which was recorded during downtime while with Deep Purple during the early 70's, and immediately after leaving the band in 1973. In saying that, the singer sounds great on material that one would think would put him totally out of his element, but he seems to be enjoying himself here on more laid back material where he can let his early roots shine through. The only song here remotely close to hard rock is "You Make Me Feel So Good", a lean rock tune with some ripping guitar work and trademark Gillan screams. Ian Gillan fanatics who need to have every recording the singer was ever involved with will no doubt need to have this, but those who prefer the singers hard rock style might want to listen before persuing.
