Moonstone Project: Time to Take a Stand

Fans of 1970s classic rock (especially Deep Purple) will want to listen to Moonstone Project's Time to Take a Stand. This project is the brainchild of Italian guitarist Matt Filippini and features several famous guests. Kelly Keeling sings on the bluesy grind of "Slave of Time". "Not Dead Yet" is a vigorous Rainbow romp, with the out of tune voice of Graham Bonnet being it's weakest link. "Fire and Water" is indeed a cover of the Free classic. This is followed by Glenn Hughes fronting the midpaced Purple-like "Rose in Hell," with its extended Ian Paice solo (Hughes also returns on "Where Do You Hide the Blues You've Got". There are more Purple-like moments on "Beggar of Love" (with James Christian) when guitarist and keyboardist duel off with each other. Indeed, Gianluca Tagliavini's Hammond does its best imitation of Jon Lord on most of the tracks. Steve Walsh is featured on the surprisingly heavy "Heavy City of Lites", and Paul Shortino on the Blackmore-inflected Hammond-heavy "Pictures of My Lonely Days", and Eric Bloom and Chris Catena square off in the closer "On the Way to Moonstone". Nobody will rate this album for originality, but it makes up for it in effort and the star players.
