Dies Irae are an all-star band of Polish death metal players, with members hailing from bands such as Vader, Behemoth, and Sceptic. Their 2004 release Sculpture of Stone is a mind-numbing aural assault of technical and powerful death metal, which easily fits in nicely with the music of the members main bands, as well as Decapitated. Intricate dual guitar riffs and solos (yes, there are plenty of solos here!), complex time changes, blistering rhythms, and growling vocals set the stage on nice tracks of unrelenting brutality, which overall are quite musically pleasing. While not really progressive metal, these four players conjure up some intense extreme metal sounds here that will no doubt raise the eyebrows of even the most cautious guitar shredder. Comprised of the twin guitar attack of Mauser & Hiro, drummer Doc, and bassist/vocalist Novy, the four rampage through one incredible song after another, each one containing plenty of instrumental fireworks and demonic vocals. The highlights? Well, there's really no stinkers here, so be prepared to be subjected to a non-stop and kick ass explosion of great grooves and shred-o-rama as only Dies Irae can provide. Fans of the Polish greats Vader, Behemoth, Sceptic, and Decapitated will be surprised at how intense this stuff is, and I can even see Meshuggah fans digging this as well.
