After a four year absence, Sweden's black metal veterans Necrophobic return with Hrimthursum, a brutal yet surprisingly melodic & musical collection of songs that fuses death and black metal really well throughout a dozen solid tracks. Littered with plenty of intricate and heavy riffs, wild drum blasts, and blood-curdling vocals, Necrophobic have created an extreme metal album here that will not only appeal to fans of Morbid Angel, Behemoth, and Dissection, but also Immortal, Bathory, and Dimmu Borgir. Catchy guitar riffs and leads permeate songs like "I Strike With Wrath" and "Bloodshed Eyes", giving the songs a memorable quality not always found in modern day black metal. At roughly 60 minutes of music, there's a lot to digest here, but each song stands on its own and has a real epic flavor, majestic sounding despite the brutality. This quality is really evident on "Sitra Ahra", a grinding mix of haunting black metal and doom, featuring a wide variety of guitar textures and vocals.
So, chalk up another solid black metal release here in 2006. Welcome back guys!
