The three guys who met at a guitar seminar in 1987 hosted by King Crimson’s Robert Fripp celebrate 15 years of playing together – first as part of Fripp’s League of Crafty Guitarists and later as the California Guitar Trio – with the release of a stunning instrumental album that features one of the most-respected bass and Chapman Stick players in the world, plus a drummer from the Eighties pop band Mr. Mister. Kyrie, indeed.
CG3 + 2 -- the trio's fourth studio album, but its first for InsideOut Music America -- pairs tenor guitarist Bert Lams, slide guitarist Paul Richards and mando-cello/guitarist Hideyo Moriya with Crimson members Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel) and Pat Mastelotto (XTC). The album includes reworked recordings of classic California Guitar Trio songs, plenty of intricate improvised pieces and astounding renditions of Yes’ “Heart of the Sunrise” and Mahavishnu Orchestra’s “Dance of Maya.” Records like this need no words.
Look for a holiday album from the trio in November 2002 -- a disc previously only available at gigs and via the band's web site.
