Cattle Decapitation: Karma Bloody Karma

Let me just state for the record that if you are not a grind fan than stop reading right now. Cattle Decapitation are one of the leaders of the modern day grind scene, a sub-genre of metal that fuses elements of ultra-technical death metal with hardcore, and throws in plenty of gore lyrics. This band ups the ante as much as possible, treading through waters made passable by the likes of Carcass and Cannibal Corpse yet increasing the technicality of the guitar and drums. It's an interesting listen to say the least, as the music is relentless and poundingly heavy while the lyrical content will either leave you feeling repulsed or laughing hysterically.

Guitarist Josh Elmore is a more than capable player, as his array of rampaging heavy riffs, technical solos, and violent pinch harmonic fills run with reckless abandon throughout Karma Bloody Karma, especially on tracks like "The New Dawn", "Total Gore?". and "One Thousand Times Decapitation". The rhythm section of bassist Troy Oftedal and drummer Michael Laughlin provide plenty of manic grooves, while lead singer alternates between high pitched screams and gutteral, menacing growls. It's a formula that surprisingly works, and has served them pretty well over the course of the few albums they have released. So if you dug Humanure, chances are this one will certainly find its way onto your current listening rotation. For those who maybe haven't yet checked out the grind scene (congratulations-you've made it this far in the review!) and perhaps are into bands like Cryptopsy or Suffocation, Cattle Decapitation are not too far off, and worth investigating.

Oh, and as always, gotta love the cover art!
