Rock mainstays Edgar Winter and Rick Derringer performed a live show in Germany for the Ohne Filter TV show back in 1990. Ohne Filter happens to be one of the longest running live music programs in the world, and this concert was expertly taped with crisp visuals and great sound, not to mention a tight performance from the band.
Most of the duo’s signature songs are played here, such as Winter’s “Free Ride”, which starts off with the opening guitar notes to “Crossroads” before Derringer rips into the familiar funky riffs. Blistering versions of the Derringer’s “Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo” and “I Play Guitar”, featuring searing lead guitar work from the axe-slinger on his Steinberger, as well as the McCoy’s hit “Hang on Sloopy”, gets the crowd going wild. The guitarist even squeezes in a lengthy unaccompanied guitar solo filled with speedy runs, whammy bar excursions, and two handed tapping. However, it is the rousing finale “Frankenstein” which really shows the talents of the whole band, especially drummer Kevin Hupp, who trades percussion solos with Winter in the closing moments.
Edgar Winter shines as well throughout on keyboards, sax, percussion, and vocals. His soulful voice has not lost much over the years (which can’t really be said for Derringer), and really fits well with the new song included, the Toto-ish “Cry Out.” In Concert is a fun 60 minutes to spend with two old favorites who still seem to have plenty of energy left.
