This self titled EP from US based black metal band Nachtmystium was originally released in 2002 in a limited pressing and has now been re-issued along with other CD's from the bands back catalogue, through Illinois based Battle Kommand Records. The fact that Battle Kommand is doing this makes sense because founding member and primary songwriter Azentrius just so happens to be the head of the record label. This CD is also unique due to the fact that it is the only Nachmystium release to feature this particular line up of musicians.
The music on this disc is caustic and dissonant, from the sweeping almost whisper like, evil vocals of Zimj to the dual blistering jagged guitar work of Azentrius and Aamonael and there is a rawness in the production and performance that sets it apart from the present version of the band which has incorporated a fuller and more complete sound. The fact that this disc has been re-released gives it a 2nd chance at some attention it didn't receive the first time around and the material contained herein is quite strong. However this isn't an essential release in the bands catalogue especially when you compare it to the bands latest onslaught Instinct: Decay, but fans of Nachtmystium will still want to add this one to their collection.
