Atreyu are back, following up 2004's The Curse with their letest Victory Records release A Death Grip On Yesterday. Not familiar with Atreyu? Well, the band does a pretty good job of mixing death metal with metalcore and emo for a sound that is pretty accessible overall, and I'm actually a little surprised that the band hasn't gotten bigger than it currently is. A song like "The Theft" has plenty of radio potential with its soaring clean vocals, Mellotron samples, and catchy hooks, while "We Stand Up" and "Ex's and Oh's" are just overall addicting metal anthems with great guitar riffs. If you like heavier and more extreme material, check out the raging "Creature", the metalcore fury of "Your Private War", the intricate twin-guitar bombast of "My Fork in the Road", and the grinding, groove laden stomp of "Untitled Finale".
Co-produced by Josh Abraham (Korn, Velvet Revolver, Stained), A Death Grip On Yesterday is a great sounding CD, filled with memorable and kick ass songs. While the music of Atreyu might not be the most original you will ever hear, if your tastes includes bands like Bleeding Through, Killswitch Engage, Chimaira, and Himsa, then do yourself a favor and check this album out.
