Dreams of Damnation: Epic Tales of Vengeance

Thrash metal is alive and well and Los Angeles based Dreams of Damnation unabashedly celebrate the old school vibe of the mid 80's to the max, while keeping their sound modern and up to date as well. It should come as no surprise then to find out that the founding member of Dreams of Damnation is none other than guitarist Jim Durkin who was a key player in the west coast thrash scene with his former band Dark Angel. While the bands roots go back to 1999, this new release called Epic Tales of Vengeance is the band's first CD of new material since their debut EP back in 2000. The bands lineup now consists of Durkin, Rick Alsup on rhythm guitar, Matt Arner on bass, Miguel Moran on drums and the absolutely and unbelievable stereotype shattering death metal vocals from female singer Loana DP Valencia.

Epic Tales of Vengeance may run a bit on the short side, clocking in at just less than thirty minutes but the band makes the most of every minute. Alsup and Durkin dish out the heavy riffs at every turn and Durkin's trademark melodic and precise solos are in supreme abundance, blending perfectly with the driving rhythm section of Arner and Moran's double bass drum attack. The true treat on this disc though is Loana's vocals. If you had no credits in front of you and were listening to this for the first time you'd have no idea it was a female spewing forth this sort of demonic venom. In fact even after numerous listens her performance remains so utterly convincing it's incredible, and her vocals are a match made in heaven for the violent musical soundtrack. This is an impressive CD overall and if these guys serve it up live with even half of the energy and aggression that they do on this CD, people are going to stand up and take notice in a big way.
