Here's an odd release: Guitarist Thorsten Koehne is at the center of what appears to be a one-off album by a mish-mash collective of artists known as Code of Perfection. Michael Angelo Batio (ex-Nitro) and Alex Beyrodt (Silent Force) each take guitar solos, while Axel Rudi Pell keyboard player Ferdy Doernberg, Japanese bassist Keisuke Nishimoto (Hideous Sun Demons) and drummer Frank Kraus (ex-Letter X) play huge-sounding, well-structured instrumental rock-borderline-metal tunes. Then Domain and Evidence One vocalist Carsten Lizard Schulz shows up for three tracks: the Sammy Hagar-like "Miracle Times" and "Superwoman," plus the classic Seventies-style scorcher "Walkin' On Thin Ice." The eight instrumental tunes range from subtle ("Underneath a Blue Kiss") to pure shred ("Psychotic Nightmare") to classic rock ("Hearts In Atlantis," with a guitar solo Bob Seger would have killed for 20 years ago). Truth be told, the instrumental tracks hold up just as well as the songs Schulz sings. Some listeners will criticize Code of Perfection for not sticking to one distinct style, but that's what makes Last Exit for the Lost such a fun listen. You never know what's coming next.
