Greaseballs,The: Tombstone Wax

If you are looking for a great disk to play at any outdoor activity this season, you can do no better than with Chicago's The Greaseballs, and this their second all original instrumental release. Take influences like Link Wray, The Ventures and in particular Dick Dale, add a dash of Tex-Mex seasoning, some rock sensibility and you have what these boys are about. Up tempo, happy yet stinging ear candy is what this release is about. Whereas their influences often struggled with properly harnessing the treble side of their performances, this is indeed a well produced, slick and crunchy listening experience. This CD contains 17 tracks, just like the bands debut, Wake Up and Smell The Greaseballs from 1997.

What strikes you immediately in this music are the serious chops displayed by the musicians, particularly Bill Bulinski and Manny Guevara on killer guitars. The music may indeed be light hearted, but as with Mr. Dale, there is serious technique and aplomb behind the playing here. Carl Hayano and Theresa Drda on bass and drums respectively, keep it all together with a collar tight back beat throughout. Just check out numbers like "Psycho Surf A GoGo", "Two Heavies And A Cruncher" and "Gluefoot".

The fact that the band, performing a mix of their own original tunes and classic cover songs has continued to exist in that glut of musical traffic that is the American Midwest, proves that there is still indeed a place for this kind of cool music in today's music scene. We should be glad for that, we need this coolness, this vibe and attitude in today's world.
