U.K. musician and producer Marvin Ayres has been composing his own unique brand of ambient chill out music for various films and media installations for many years, and Scape continues the tradition. Scape was actually created to be the soundtrack for a 40 minute short film by Pete Gomes, someone Ayres has collaborated with on more than one occasion in the past.
The music on Scape can safely be divided into 2 sections, with the first 9 songs, while still considered ambient, actually having a fair share of minimalist, albeit somewhat fractured and uneven, beats lurking just underneath the multi layered surface. The second half of the disc "Clusters" takes the listener on a more serene and dreamier trip as Ayres' violin and electronic textures create an almost ethereal feeling of traveling amongst the heavens. The lack of any kind of percussion on the remaining eleven tracks gives the feeling of having listened to 2 separate albums instead of one complete body of work, yet the "Scape" and "Clusters" tracks segue and flow together seamlessly; adding to the mystery. Overall the music on this disc is hypnotic, rich and full of depth. If you enjoy ambient music in a style reminiscent of some of Brian Eno's earlier work then you'll not only want to seek out Scape, you'll also want to find out more about more about the fascinating world of Marvin Ayres.
