Orbit Service : Songs of Eta Carinae

With a slow and plodding start to their 2006 release, their hypnotic and anxt filled lyrics really set the mood for what will follow on a journey that explores many facets of the stoner rock / space / Pink Floyd style that has been adopted by so many bands recently. Featuring lashings of acoustic guitar with more than enough tremolo and reverb and being underpinned by a driving intensity that never fails to excite, Orbit Service have done justice to a sub genre of progressive music that many other bands have failed to do.

The track, "Hallucination" is particularly impressive with its hypnotic electronic samples and rhythmic foundation accompanied by whispered vocals with echo and distorted guitars while "Asphyxia" plods along with a simple but steady beat and sparse vocals, also whispered. Various keyboard and electronic sound effects, squeak and squawk, tweak and talk in a mesmeric way that could become the ideal companion to your prefer method of mind altering nirvana.

Certainly, this type of music is not for everybody and had it been released 2 or 3 decades ago might have been dismissed out of hand as being too far out there or not cohesive enough and with insufficient melody and structure to be taken seriously. Today, with so many different facets of music being readily accepted by a voracious public, the word will eventually emerge about bands who aspire to dominate in this category. Orbit Service could well be one of them.

The majority of the songs are quite simple in their structure and while not endowed with any musical jiggery pokery or feisty instrumental dexterity, the dedicated number of fans that are missing what might have happened if the Floyd didn't hit the divorce courts, could well find some solace with this pretty interesting offering. Just don't expect too much of the well celebrated lead breaks or the immediate hooks that Gilmore, Waters, Wright, Mason and Co used to supply.
