Graham, Ricky: Refraction

This latest EP from guitarist Ricky Graham is an interesting smattering of hard rock, shred guitar, and Frippertronic-like soundscapes. Not one to settle into one specific style, Graham instead proves to be a very versatile player, easily able to fool the listener with an amalgam of sounds and textures on each track, of which there are five here. From Satriani-inspired electro-crunch of "Black Ice", to the soaring volume swells of "Lucid", and even a mix of heavy metal rhythms with jangly leads on "Refraction", the guitarist certainly keeps you guessing. He even conjures up some nifty 70's styled Steve Hackett inspired lines on "Dream Awake". In addition, the guy even sings on two tracks, and while it's not his strong point, he still handles himself admirably. I'd certainly like to hear more from this player, as he seems to have an abundance of ideas, and I think with a full band around him he might raise some serious attention to his music.
