Dimmu Borgir: World Misanthropy (DVD)

If you are a black metal fan and want to get your hands on a loaded DVD of one of the better bands out on the scene right now then get your hands on World Misanthropy from Dimmu Borgir. The symphonic black metal masters have been on a constant roll since the mid-90's with standout albums like Stormblast, Enthrone Darkness Triumphant, and Death Cult Armaggedon, and this DVD sort of culminates the first decade in the bands history. Containing live clips from Wacken and Stuttgart in 2001 (the tour supporting Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia) as well as some older footage, interviews, and backstage mania, this DVD not only displays Dimmu Borgir as the menacing metal machine that they are, but also the human side away from the corpse paint. Yes, they are human as well, as the backstage footage of them goofing off, telling stories of their childhood, drinking with pals Nevermore on the road (watch a hilarious impression of Motley Crue's Tommy Lee by drummer Van Williams) hanging out at the beach and in the studio.

The live footage from Wacken and Stuttgart is really the reason to get this set, as their are four songs from each gig featured here, both in front of a large audience and showing Dimmu Borgir in full command of their performance and the audience. Tracks like "Indoctrination", "Puritania", and "The Blazing Monoliths of Defiance" show the bands intense mix of lethal black metal and symphonic keyboards driving full-force. The guitars of Galder and Silenoz and beefy and technical, Mustis' keyboards over the top, the rhythm section of Nick Barker and Vortex pefectly in synch and bashing (Vortex adds some great clean vocals as well), plus the commanding shrieks of Shagrath add that evil edge to their otherwise dark yet orchestral sound. Looks closely (and quickly) for quick glimspes of KK Downing, Garm of Ulver, members of Susperia, Warrel Dane, and others, in the many backstage clips included here. Another thing I found interesting is to hear what music the band plays while drinking and relaxing during rehearsal on down time-you would think the band would be cranking other extreme metal, but instead you will hear bands like Europe, Motely Crue, Saxon, Rainbow, WASP, Judas Priest, and KISS in the background throughout much of the non-concert part of the DVD.

So, prepare to get completely pummeled and entertained by one of the greatest Norwegian black metal bands on the planet-the mighty Dimmu Borgir. You'll bang your head, laugh, and be repulsed at all the different aspects of World Misanthropy-what more can you ask for?
