With a furious death metal force that's hard to ignore, Norway's Zyklon is set to once again make their mark on the extreme world with Disintegrate, their follow-up to 2003's critically praised Aeon. This latest release offers no real surprises, but when a band like Zyklon delivers such unrestrained brutality time and time again, the less variation on that principle the better. As unrelenting as Hate Eternal on the title track, as lethal as Morbid Angel on "Ways of the World", and as epic & technical as Nile on "A Cold Grace", Zyklon display many of the same qualities as some of the heavy hitters on the death metal scene. Huge riffs, technical drum work, evil vocals…well, that says it all. There's a nice mix of speeds here too, from the manic, almost Cryptopsy-like fury of "Vile Ritual", to the doomy vine that permeates the spacey "Skinned and Endangered", the band proves that non-stop riffage and blast beats is great, but not always necessary. While Disintegrate is mostly a death metal album, there are some black metal influences from time to time, no doubt due to the commanding presence of both guitarist Samoth and drummer Trym, who many will remember from their days with the legendary Emperor. Recorded at the famed Studio Fredman and mixed by Fredrik Nordstrom, Disintegrate is a great sounding death metal record that will surely gain Zyklon many new fans on the growing extreme metal scene.
