K-Space: Going Up

I have always struggled with the correlation that noise and music are synonymous. In order to have some value, the noise, or for that matter, the instruments, must be put together to create a sound that is appealing or at least cohesive enough to be worth joining together. K-Space has given us an avent-garde release that attempts just that. Although Going Up is not really my cup of tea, I applaud much of the effort of bringing in sounds as diverse as burning wood, blackbirds, and footfalls to try and create a unique sound-scape. "Yellow Canal" is an example of where it works, mixing rhythms with other industrial sounds. "Three Dungurs" is one where it doesn't, with just too much rhythm and noise that doesn't add anything to the overall picture.

And really, that is my biggest problem with K-Space. It is like an artist continuing to throw paint and hunks of clay at a marble pillar and calling it art. Yes, each can be used to create art, but just the use of these mediums does not make it so. Going Up may appeal to the extreme RIO fans out there, but it really doesn't have enough "spice" to be anything but a novelty.
