Bloodthorn: Genocide

Norway's Bloodthorn makes a drastic change with their sound here on their fourth release, as after some personnel changes and a move to a new label (Morningstar Records) the band has dropped the black metal styled keyboards and female backing vocals that permeated their earlier albums. The truth of the matter is their brand new release Genocide is one hell-spawned platter of ferocity and technical brutality that might even make bands like Behemoth, Vader, and Decapitated quake in their boots. I mention these three bands specifically, not just because they are three of the heaviest and most brutal bands around, but because Bloodthorn have a certain Polish death metal style to their music. Dizzying and relentless drums, technical and pulverizing guitar riffs, and venomous vocals, all make up the Bloodthorn sound. The songs themselves are chaotic examples of pure death metal, enough to shake the foundation of any major city much like a severe earthquake. "Blood and Iron" contains plenty of nightmarish vocals and tumultuous riffs, while other tunes like "Invoking the Apocalypse" and "They Will Arise" provide plenty of savagery and guitar virtuosity, almost like a brazen mix of Cannibal Corpse and Arch Enemy. The band even adds in some atmospheric and progressive elements to their apocalyptic mayhem on "Hell on the Eastern Front". I can't imagine any fan of death metal not getting into these guys, as Genocide packs a mean punch and is plenty extreme. Bloodthorn is a band to watch out for if you follow the genre.
