Circulus: The Lick On The Top Of An Envelope Yet To Be Sent

Circulus are a 7 piece outfit hailing from the U.K. who play a unique blend of medieval pop with roots firmly planted in the 70's, yet managing to sound very current at the same time. If it appears confusing, it's not really and the truth of the matter is, Circulus' musical blend of influences from the past, coupled with splashes of electronic psychedelia make for a very refreshing and enriching listening experience. Throughout The Lick On The Top Of An Envelope Yet To Be Sent, dreamy, ethereal vocals dance alongside traditional folk instruments with free flowing ease and such numbers as "Miri it is", "My body is made of sunlight" and the melancholic "We are long lost" are perfect examples of how the band blends these sounds together in perfect unison. Two of the strongest numbers on this CD, "Orpheus" and "The Aphid" are instrumentals with a strong emphasis on the electronic. "Orpheus" features a flute and synth workout over a groovy backbeat while "The Aphid" ventures even deeper into the trippy psychedelic realm as bongos and drums provide the foundation for spacey, electronic flights of fancy. One of the last numbers on the disc is the hauntingly beautiful ballad "Candlelight" which has the band stripping things down a bit musically, but really shows the true power of a great song doesn't always require a lot of accompaniment to highlight it's true beauty. This CD will not be everyone's cup of tea, but if you're interested in hearing what an innovative, fresh sounding new face on the scene can create by borrowing from the past and mixing it with the sounds of today, then you'll be want to hear what Circulus are all about.
